An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
