FAQ

What is the difference?

The two are similar but not identical. A mechanic repairs cars and an automotive technician performs maintenance.

A mechanic must be skilled in manual dexterity and able to complete simple tasks quickly. A mechanic must be able diagnose and fix problems quickly and accurately.

An automotive technician needs to be more technically skilled than a mechanic. They must be able to read blueprints and use tools such as drills and wrenches.

They must also be able perform complex procedures safely. They must be familiar with all types of electrical and engine systems.

They must also be capable of understanding how parts interact.

A mechanic typically earns less than an automotive technician. Both careers have many options.

How long does an apprenticeship in automotive mechanics last?

An automotive mechanic apprenticeship takes around three years to complete. It includes two years of school and two years as an apprentice. The first year is used to learn all aspects of the trade including safety procedures and theory. You'll also learn the safe and efficient use of tools during this first year. After the completion of the first year, you will spend another year on the job training. Here you'll gain valuable experience in different trades. These years will offer you the opportunity to attend formal classes.

The final year of this program is spent in obtaining qualifications and becoming certified in your field. These include NVQs or National Vocational Qualifications. These are earned after passing exams that cover specific topics in the industry. The HNCs (Higher National Certificates), on the other hand, cover general subjects like customer service and management. Finally, there are City & Guilds certificates that are offered for those who wish to become qualified in certain trades.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. It's the easiest way for most people to get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license will permit you to sell spares parts and perform minor repairs. You can't fix major engine problems with your license.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. This allows employers to pick the right candidates for their jobs.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates have no difficulty learning about cars because they already know the basics and principles of mechanical engineering.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, they focus on high-quality customer service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to manage their own businesses rather than delegating responsibility to others.

You might find yourself working long hours but having no control over what happens in the day.

Expect to earn lower salaries than if you were working in a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. It is possible to switch between different types of jobs if your current employer would prefer you to work at a dealer.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. You can earn more depending on many other factors.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.

How can I fix my car as a hobby?

Take up a hobby in car repair if you have an interest. It is possible to learn about cars, repair them, purchase parts, or simply enjoy them. If you are looking for something more, it would be an excellent hobby.

It's difficult to make this a fulltime job. It takes dedication and hardwork. Also, you will need to put a lot of money into it.

If you don't have any good reasons to be involved in cars, it may be better to just let it go.

How long does a good mechanic take?

You need to have years of experience and practice before you can become a master mechanic. You can learn the most effective way to fix cars by learning from a professional mechanic.

You will need to spend some time in a garage to learn as much about cars and mechanics as possible. You will need to be familiar with mechanical engineering books about mechanics, car design, and other topics.

And you'll also need to attend auto school.

The most important thing is to start early. Don't wait until you're older to begin studying automotive technology. Get started now if you are interested in becoming a mechanic.

Is it hard to get work as an auto mechanic?

It is possible. Garages often advertise their jobs online and people just apply because it seems fun. Try applying to a few jobs and seeing if the garages accept student applications. You could also ask your family and friends if they know anyone in the industry. They might be willing to recommend someone.

How To

How to Become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
