FAQ

Is it hard to get a job working as an auto mechanic?

It can be done. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. Try applying to a few jobs and seeing if the garages accept student applications. Alternatively, you could ask friends and family if they know anyone who works in the industry. You might be able to refer someone.

Does it matter what college I go to?

Non, really. There's no difference between colleges regarding getting into the automotive industry. There are some schools that offer more specific programs than others.

To be a car mechanic, do you need a degree? Do I have to study part-time?

It is not essential, but it is helpful. Employers prefer candidates who have completed a full degree. This shows you have put in the work and achieved success.

This doesn't necessarily mean you can't continue to work while studying. Some universities allow students the flexibility to finish coursework during summer vacations and resume their studies later in year. Other universities permit students to take classes part-time during the school year.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. In addition, some states license technicians immediately after they receive their license, while others wait until they have completed at least six months of employment as an automotive technician.

Apply to your local dealership to become an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

The salary for an automotive technician depends on several factors, including the type of employer, location, education level, and experience. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
